Safety is our number one priority at the YMCA. These age guidelines will help to ensure you and your family’s safety while having fun at the Y! Please review the dress code, and age, cardio & strength, and gymnasium guidelines below.

AGE GUIDELINES

POOL
  • Open Swim (BHSJ & NB) & Family Float (BHSJ only) – Open to all families, adults, & children. Those 7 and under must be accompanied by an adult in the water. All children under 42” tall from the shoulder to the floor must also be with an adult.
  • Lap Swim – Children 13 and over only.
  • Family Swim in the Therapy Pool (NB only) – Open to all families and adults. Anyone under the age of 18 must have an adult in the water with them in order to help keep the family environment.
GYMNASIUM
  • Children 7 and under need to be accompanied by an adult or sibling 13 and over (unless specified on schedule for adults, teens, youths).
CHILDWATCH
  • BHSJ: 6 weeks–8 years. During the school year, there will be a supervised area for kids up to age 13 to gather and work on homework, read, etc.
  • NB: 6 weeks–12 years
ACTION ZONE
  • BHSJ: 8–13 years
  • Summer only
CARDIO ROOM/TRACK
  • 11–12-year-olds who complete orientation are allowed to use the cardio machines & track without adult supervision.
  • Children under 13 who have not completed orientation may not use cardio machines and must be accompanied by an adult within arm’s reach in order to use the track.
  • 13–15-year-olds need to complete the orientation for all other machines in the cardio room.
WEIGHT ROOM
  • 13–15-year-olds must have a weight room orientation with a trainer and be supervised by a trainer or parent upon completion of orientation.
GROUP EXERCISE
  • No children under 13 allowed in fitness classes.
  • Family/Youth Classes – Children 4 and under need to be accompanied by an adult or sibling 13 and over. Children 5 and over who are able to follow instructions and be attentive in class can attend the class alone.

DRESS CODE

  • Closed toe athletic shoes are required.
  • Chest, sports bra, and midriff should be covered.
  • Buttocks should be covered at all times.
  • Due to health risks, plastic clothing is prohibited.
  • Clothing with offensive language or pictures is prohibited.
  • The YMCA reserves the right to define inappropriate dress when necessary.

STRENGTH & CARDIO GUIDELINES

  • Your safety matters. Please avoid dropping weights. If you can’t control the put-down, then drop your weight down.
  • Return all equipment to its original location for the convenience of others.
  • Your health matters. Please wipe off equipment after each use. Please refrain from spitting.
  • Thank you for being courteous. During peak times please limit your time to 30 minutes on cardio equipment.
  • When people are waiting, please allow them to work in between your sets.
  • Thank you for being respectful. Please limit cell phone conversations to the lobby and hallway.
  • When playing music on your electronic device, please use headphones or earbuds.
  • This is a spill-free zone. Only water and sports drinks are allowed. Drinks must be in bottles made of non-breakable materials with caps.
  • Thank you for alerting us. Report any equipment in need of repair to YMCA staff.
  • This is a chalk and powder free zone.
  • Use of non-YMCA personal trainers and athletic coaches is prohibited. The YMCA offers personal training for our facility members and guests.
  • All recordings must be approved and supervised by YMCA staff.
  • Families are welcome here. Respectful language and behavior is expected by all.

GYMNASIUM GUIDELINES

  • Thank you for keeping our facility clean. No food is allowed in the gymnasium
  • This is a spill-free zone. Only water and sports drinks are allowed. Drinks must be in bottles made of non-breakable materials with caps.
  • Sportsman-like conduct is an expectation.
  • Families are welcome here. Respectful language and behavior is expected by all.
  • Your safety matters. Dunking and hanging from rims is prohibited.
  • Use equipment properly.
  • Disagreements, disputes, and arguments will be settled in a polite and nonviolent manner.
  • Players are responsible for any damages resulting from misconduct or misuse of equipment and facilities.
  • The Y is not responsible for lost or stolen articles. Please keep your items locked up.
  • All recordings must be approved and supervised by YMCA staff.
  • Use of non-YMCA personal trainers and athletic coaches is prohibited. The YMCA offers personal training for our facility members and guests.

CODE OF CONDUCT

  • Resolve conflicts in a respectful, honest and caring manner; never resort to physical contact, verbal abuse, or threatening gestures.
  • Speak in respectful tones and refrain from the use of vulgar/derogatory comments or profanity.
  • Respect others by refraining from intimate behavior in public; abstain from contact of a sexual nature.
  • Respect the property of others; never engage in theft or destruction.
  • Create a safe, caring environment; never carry firearms or weapons on YMCA premises.
  • Participate in programs to build a healthy spirit, mind, and body. For participant’s safety, never engage in the use, sale, dispense, possession, or appear to be under the influence of illegal drugs, narcotics, or the unsanctioned use of alcohol on YMCA premises. This includes marijuana.
  • Prohibit anyone convicted of a crime involving child abuse or sexual abuse, or anyone listed on the National Sex Offender List to participate under my membership.
  • Abstain from the use of tobacco products, including vaping, in the facility or on the property.
